What you are really deciding
Both options aim for the same result: qualified meetings with the right decision-makers. The difference is who recruits, trains and manages the people who book them, and who carries the risk if it does not work.
Before comparing, be clear about your goal. Are you testing a new market, scaling a proven model or filling a gap while you hire? Each points to a different answer.
In-house appointment setting
Hiring your own SDRs makes sense when appointment setting is a long-term part of your sales model and you have someone with the time and experience to lead the team.
- Pros: full control of the process, deep product knowledge over time and a natural career path into sales.
- Cons: recruiting and onboarding take months, results depend on a few people and you carry the cost even when the work is not going well.
Outsourced appointment setting
An outside partner provides trained callers, lists, tools and management. You agree on the target profile and the definition of a qualified meeting, and the partner does the work in your name.
- Pros: a faster start, experience from many campaigns, flexible capacity and less risk if results disappoint.
- Cons: less direct control, knowledge stays partly with the partner and quality varies a lot between providers.
Side-by-side comparison
| In-house | Outsourced | |
|---|---|---|
| Time to start | Recruiting plus onboarding, often months | Usually a few weeks |
| Cost structure | Salary, benefits, tools and management time | Hourly rate or price per meeting |
| Control | Full | Shared, through reporting and regular reviews |
| Scaling up or down | Slow; hiring and notice periods | Flexible within the agreement |
| New markets and languages | Requires new hires for each language | Often covered by the partner's team |
| If it does not work | You carry the cost and the restart | Adjust or end the agreement |
The hybrid option
Many companies combine the two. A partner opens a new market or covers a peak while the in-house team focuses on existing territories. Others start with an outside team, learn what works and then hire internally with a proven playbook.
How to decide
Outsourcing is usually the better start if you need meetings within weeks, are entering a new market or language, or have no one free to lead an SDR team. Building in-house is often the better long-term choice when the model is proven and appointment setting is core to how you grow.
